Barbara Guthrie has been implementing solutions to deliver safe living and working environments for people around the globe through her over thirty years’ experience in safety-science research, regulatory code and standards development, laboratory operations, product and system certifications, training and education.
Guthrie is responsible for ensuring UL remains focused on its public safety mission
by leading initiatives that protect, enhance and extend the mission globally. As VP CSR, Barbara is a visionary and
strategist responsible for developing and executing the overarching CSR
strategy for the Company across the entire CSR landscape, expanding and
elevating the Company’s understand of and commitment to the organization’s
sustainability, corporate citizenship, philanthropy, corporate giving, employee
engagement and social responsibility initiatives.
as UL’s Chief Public Safety Officer, Barbara led the team that began
formulation of an algorithm to produce a numerical index that quantifies the relative
safety of living and working environments for various geo-locales. The UL Safety Index™ is a dynamic data
science initiative that provides accurate, relevant data to be used to explore
specific safety outcomes, inform policy and investment choices, and make
informed, science-based decisions for a more secure, sustainable, safer world.
Achieving a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
in 1984, Ms. Guthrie began her career testing and certifying products for
safety. Obtaining her Master in Business
Administration and completing Yale’s Executive Leadership Program, Barbara
facilitated reciprocity agreements contributing to the global trade of
certified products. She moved to Denmark
serving as Executive Director European Operations where she planned and
executed UL’s expansion in Europe. Upon returning to the United States in 2000,
Barbara combined her business and engineering skills with the mindset of a
dedicated mom to create, design and execute a global youth safety education
program - Safety Smart® in partnership with The Walt Disney
Company. Safety Smart® deploys a tested
and proven educational methodology utilizing animation, live-action,
gamification, songs and interactive experiments and lessons. Safety Smart® has been adopted in over 24 countries
translated into 34 languages and has educated over 900 million kids and adults
around the globe.
Believing in relationships and networking to make the
world a safer place, Barbara supports several Boards and committees involving
and including the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), National
Consumers League (NCL), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the
Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), Home Fire Sprinkler
Coalition, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Educational Messages
Advisory Committee and serves as past-Chair to UL’s Consumer Advisory Council
and President to the Bradley University Alumni Association Board. Barbara is
recognized as a UL Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, and in 2014 was
initiated as a William Henry Merrill Society Corporate Fellow where she now
serves as the Society Chair.
