Make some noise

Before you start your car, bang loudly on the hood. Cats and wildlife sometimes curl up under there (sneaking in from underneath the car) to take advantage of a warm engine, and they can fall asleep there. You don’t want to start the car with a stowaway on board. You can honk the horn as well as banging on the hood to scare them away.
