Processed meats

Research on the effect of meat on blood pressure has been mixed, but a recent analysis of 49 different studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that a vegetarian diet is associated with lower blood pressure.

At least one study has shown a clear connection between consumption of processed meat (like cold cuts) and high blood pressure, probably due in part to the high salt content of processed meat. One 2-ounce serving of cold cuts can contain half your daily allowance of sodium, according to the American Heart Association. A large study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that women who consumed five or more servings of processed meat a week had a 17 percent higher blood pressure rate than those who consumed less than one serving per week.
