If you think this melon's tough, thick skin always protects the sweet fruit inside, you're wrong. ''Salmonella can be on the nooks and crannies on the skin," Adalja says. The rough surface is hard to scrub and clean. The bugs that remain can end up on your plate after you slice the melon. In 2014, 261 people fell sick from contaminated cantaloupe traced to a single farm, and three died. Unsanitary practices at the processing facility were blamed. Unfortunately, buying organic won’t help; plenty of organic products have also been contaminated with salmonella.
