Think cotton, not wool or permanent press

Wear loose, breathable clothing made of cotton or natural fibers (except wool) if you have dry, itchy skin, says Hudacek. Many people find that wool can cause contact dermatitis — skin inflammation that includes itching or redness caused by an irritant. Clothing fibers that have been treated with chemicals and dyes (or formaldehyde in permanent press, anti-cling or waterproof clothing) can also cause itching and dermatitis, according to Joseph Fowler, MD, of the department of dermatology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Kentucky. Before wearing new machine-washable clothing, wash them in hot water. In addition, look for “formaldehyde-free” labels on shampoo and other personal care products.
