Replacing a hot water heater

Even if you drain the tank safely, a water heater is heavy, cumbersome and tough to install properly. Gas models require new flexible hoses and must be checked for leaks. They usually should be elevated on blocks and installed in an area where the pilot light won’t ignite other objects in the room. Gas water heaters need to be level and vented properly to the outside or else the carbon monoxide produced during heating can back up into the surrounding area. Electric models typically don’t need to be vented, but it’s still a job best left to a pro — installing one on an improperly sized circuit could lead to an electrical overload or even a fire.
