A puppy

That fluffy puppy is oh so cute, but don’t click the “buy” button. Most puppies sold online come from puppy mills, where dogs are kept in dirty, tight spaces and not provided with proper vet care, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Consumers also can fall prey to switcheroo scams, in which they pay $1,000 or more for a puppy, then get a different dog, according to the ASPCA. Adopt rather than shopping, the ASPCA recommends. Browse sites that showcase local pets available for adoption, but always meet a pup in person before you take him home.
